While the earthquake in January 2010 brought about a host of new challenges in Haiti, Lekole de la Grace de Caneille was able to continue both its operations as well as welcome 27 new students from a nearby refugee camp. Despite the enormous challenges our students and teachers faced this year, we sent our first graduating class of sixth graders to take the national exams necessary for admission to high school in Haiti. Thanks to the dedication of our sixth grade students, their parents, teachers, and administrators; 100% of our students passed the government examination. Because of their success, many have been able to continue their educations at high schools in Hinche where they stay with relatives during the school week.
The reputation of the school has been bolstered by the universal graduation of our sixth grade students. As a result, we received an incredible response when registration opened this fall. We saw more than a 50% increase in the number of students registered. We began the 2010-2011 school year serving 195 students in first through sixth grades.
In the face of such success, we must continue our support for Lekole de la Grace de Caneille and the students working so hard to transform their future through education. We believe the completion of six permanent classrooms in 2011 is a tangible way to demonstrate our continued support of the school and commitment to its students, teachers, and families. Permanent classrooms will provide all of our students and teachers a safe, distraction-free environment to learn.
To meet these commitments, we must set our fundraising goal for November, December, and January at an aggressive $10,000. We are already on our way to reaching this goal through a variety of fundraisers, but we cannot do it without your continued support. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation this holiday season to really make a difference in the lives of these children and their families.
Cookies for Caneille is another great opportunity for you to show your support for our efforts. If you live within the Fox Cities area, consider placing an order of holiday cookies this season.
It is tremendous to see the influence that our work has had on the community in Caneille over the past four years. It is even more exciting to imagine what impact the promise of education will have on a generation of children whose parents never had such an opportunity. I will be traveling to Caneille in February and hope to express our continued support for the exciting work being done in the lives of these nearly 200 children and their families. Please consider joining us in our effort to achieve the fundraising target necessary to help these students pull their families out of absolute poverty.
